They have met the former champions Melbourne City FC twice this season and have successfully defeated them both times.
At present, Adelaide United has occupied the third spot in the league table with 18 points, though they have played 13 games till now. Adelaide United started their campaign with three consecutive draws. First with Perth Glory 1-1, the second game against the champions Melbourne City FC 2-2 and then a goalless draw against Brisbane Roar. Following this, they lost two games on a roll. They had to wait for six games to register their first win of the season. From their last five games, they have gained 10 points, including three wins, one draw and one defeat. In their recent match against Melbourne City FC, they won through a winner in the 85th minute.
The league table looks very competitive at this stage, and the Western United have somehow managed to get on the top spot. 5 points differentiate the gap between the leaders and the team on the 7th spot. A slip from any team can prove beneficial for other teams. The Melbourne City FC has lost three games and drew four games. They will have to do better than this and be more competitive to regain the title. The Western United will have to contain their lead, and looking at their current form, it seems pretty challenging to take them off from the first spot.
